While the Webster University Journal was in Joplin, Mo. for the MCMA conference, we decided to take a trip out to the Oklahoma border in search of the infamous Joplin Spook Light.

On the night of Saturday, April 12, 2008, we ventured where no other college newspaper staff has ventured. And we brought back proof.

We stopped on the side of the road where we believed our Web provided directions were leading us. It was clearly visible far in advance when a car was approaching.

After a few minutes of waiting, we started to hear a scream. It was described as "a woman being choked while screaming into something metal," by Katie Osborne. We thought it was someone trying to mess with us so we screamed back. It just kept going.

It was then that I remembered that my photographer, Colin Dabbs, had a digital audio recorder with him. I told him to get it out and record the noise.

Shortly after Colin started recording, he started walking down the road towards the noise. We saw hiim far in the distance taking pictures. The only way we could see him is when his camera flash fired.

Colin went slightly off the road and Katie said she thought he was going in the woods. Shortly after, we all heard something. I thought it was "Hey come see this." Others heard a seperate "Hey" and an "Oh Sh*t."

A few moments later, we saw something sprinting down the road at us. As it approached, we realized it was Colin in a panic. He was yelling at us to get in the car. He was seriously spooked but we all thought he was just trying to scare us.

We rushed back to the hotel room to listen to the recording. This is the audio file directly from the recorder unedited. Colin is working on a processed version of the clip as well and I will post that as soon as I recieve it.

While Colin was down there, no cars approached. It would be very easy to see a car in that level of darkness. We did however see a red glow that looked as if a car was driving towards us with only its brake lights on. It seemed to get closer and it never turned around. It just dissapeared. Here is a 15 second exposure at ISO 1600 to show the strech of road we were on. This was taken at was later realized was the same time Colin was running back towards us. If you look on the left side of the road, you can see telephone poles going off into the distance. Just to the right of the second one, there is a black mass. For that mass to appear, something must have been standing still for the entire 15 seconds. No one saw it until we reviewd the image.

So far through our research, we are guessing that this sound is either some sort of screech or barn owl, a cougar or a bobcat. There is no explination for the man in the field.
